Development of online GIS (Geographical Information Systems) training
There is an ever increasing demand across UCC for GIS training\education. As spatial data comes more available and the technology becomes more user-friendly, the use of GIS within UCC is growing and the need for effective training is intensifying. GIS has traditionally been a core element of the geography department teaching, with modules offered at undergraduate and postgraduate level. More recently BEES have started to offer GIS teaching at postgraduate level. There is a limited staff available to teach GIS within the university (Geography – 2, BEES – 1) and they are stretched to capacity covering the existing modules offered. There is now a demand for additional GIS modules (i.e. Geology, Civil engineering) but it is not possible to meet this demand at present. I believe that the only way to meet the growing demand is through the more effective use of technology and particularly online tools in our teaching.
